Job Summary:

The Event & Marketing Coordinator at the Mississippi Aquarium plays a crucial role in assisting with event coordination and supporting the marketing team. This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, with a passion for creating memorable experiences for guests.

Primary Responsibilities:

Mississippi Aquarium Event Coordination Assistance:

• Assist in development and coordination of various events at the Aquarium.
• Help with logistics, vendor coordination, and on-site event support to ensure smooth operations.
• Provide setup, day of, and breakdown support during the event.

Sales Event, Group, and Birthday Coordination Assistance:

• Assist in coordinating sales events, sales groups and birthdays as needed.
• Promptly respond to inquiries regarding birthday parties and other related events as assigned.
• Provide detailed information and assistance to clients, ensuring their needs are met and expectations are exceeded.

Marketing Support:

• Assist the marketing team with social media efforts, including content creation, scheduling, and community engagement.
• Draft marketing documents to include but not limited to: Press releases and radio scripts as needed for MSAQ Events.
• Perform administrative tasks as assigned, such as updating databases, preparing reports, and organizing marketing materials.
• Coordinate and attend Outreach Events as requested to amplify Mississippi Aquariums presence in the community and support the aquarium’s mission.

Qualifications:

The Marketing and Graphic Design Specialist contributes to the success of Mississippi Aquarium and its financial sustainability by creating integrated marketing campaigns, marketing collateral and content for print, digital communications and advertising. The position will collaborate with all departments to ensure creative content is consistent with Aquarium branding.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Maintain look, feel and design direction of integrated marketing communications and materials consistent with the Aquarium’s brand, messaging and mission

• Design, develop and produce marketing visual materials including, but not limited to brochures, outdoor, event collateral, facility guides, sales kits, advertising, video, digital and on-line graphics: develop new identities for large and special events as needed 

• Coordinate with outside vendors (such as billboard, television, etc.) on scheduling, installation, and implementation of brand campaigns

• Collect, format and organize all marketing assets including, but not limited to images and videos 

• Meet and collaborate with all departments to generate creative initiatives to increase brand and event awareness; create a cohesive look to Aquarium messaging across all departments to ensure what the audience sees outside of our campus accurately reflects what they will experience on campus 

• Attend marketing and department meetings as needed 

• Coordinate, fulfill and distribute on-site and off-site marketing promotions and signage 

• Adhere to efficient production schedules 

• Create concepts for consumer advertising and brand campaign; continually evaluate design and production trends; update and incorporate as needed

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or marketing with certificate in graphic design 

• Minimum of 3 years of integrated marketing campaign design experience 

• Experience in photography, video production and editing and graphics production within the Adobe Creative Suite required to create visual designs that clearly communicate messaging and calls to action for distinct audiences

Job Summary:

The Marketing & Events Intern at Mississippi Aquarium will gain hands-on experience supporting the aquarium’s marketing initiatives and special events. This role includes assisting with social media, content creation, event planning, and community outreach while working closely with the marketing team to enhance guest engagement and promote upcoming programs and campaigns.

Key Responsibilities:

POSITION SUMMARY

The position requires a highly motivated individual who will take direction from the Curators, Area Supervisors and/or Sr. Vice President of Property Operations in carrying out the animal care routine and maintenance for an assigned set of habitats. The position will also be responsible for maintaining organized written records pertaining to health, feeding, water quality, animal welfare and behavioral observations. This position is responsible for adhering to all aquarium safety, protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) accreditation standards.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assists in the daily care and behavioral conditioning of bottlenose dolphins, North American river otters, and other taxa as needed
• Maintains a superior level of professionalism while performing primary/key roles in daily guest presentation and interaction programs
• Interacts with guests and crew members in a positive and professional manner

·         Assists Senior Animal Care Specialists with the development and implementation of dynamic animal training projects and programs that serve to enhance animal care, animal management, guest experience, and Aquarium public relations

As an intern, you can expect to get hands-on experience in the daily care of our coral systems, tracking growth rate and research. Throughout the Internship, Interns will learn various tasks required for the daily operation of multiple coral systems; gain valuable knowledge in water chemistry, aquarium life support systems, aquatic biology, and quarantine systems; and develop skills in time management, communication, and teamwork. The position will also be responsible for adhering to all aquarium safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards. The goal is to help Interns succeed professionally in any chosen field.

QUALIFICATIONS

· 18 years of age or older

· Enrolled in or recent graduate of a four-year college program in biology, marine biology, or another related field

· Ability to work weekends, holidays, and possible late hours

The Coral Laboratory Aquarist is responsible for providing the highest possible quality of care to the animals under their assigned care, under the guidance of the Vice President of Veterinary Services and Research and the Coral Laboratory Supervisor. This individual provides assigned specimens with excellent day-to-day care through approved husbandry practices; keep systems/enclosures, support equipment, and workspaces well maintained to MSAQ standards; participate in the acquisition/disposition, transport, acclimation, and quarantine of animals; participate in the design, construction and maintenance of lab and reserve tanks, including life support material and equipment, as assigned.

This position requires a highly motivated individual who will be the Coral Laboratory Aquarist working with mesophotic and deep-water coral at the offsite facility (ARC). This project is funded by the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation and is a part of the Coral Propagation Techniques project involving multiple governmental and non-governmental partners. Funding is secured through January 31, 2026. The position will also be responsible for adhering to all aquarium safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Essential responsibilities include:

1. Responsible for the care and feeding of the coral collection and systems at off-site facility

• Completes inspection rounds of specimens, exhibits and reserve tanks twice daily to check status and identify and report potential problems to the Coral Laboratory Supervisor. 
• Prepares food and feeds assigned animals/systems/enclosures, in accordance with dietary needs. Cleans and provides daily maintenance to food preparation areas, food preparation equipment and utensils.
• Prepares diets and diet supplements according to established protocols to ensure nutrition and vitamin content are maintained to keep animals at peak health.
• Observes medical conditions that may require attentions and reports observations to Coral Laboratory Supervisor and Vice President or Veterinary Services and Research.
• Administers medications and implements routine quarantine procedures as prescribed.
• Maintains detailed, daily husbandry records and reviews records regularly to identify important trends and enters notes into TRACKS medical records software.
• Preform daily water quality testing and maintain results in TRACKS medical records software.

2. Participate in the acquisition and transport of corals and invertebrates  

• Participates in field collection trips (when possible or needed) using appropriate equipment.
• Checks with Coral Laboratory Supervisor and Vice President of Veterinary Services and Research prior to collection of specimens to ensure adequate animal holding facilities in accordance with biological requirements of the animals are available. 
• Maintains acquisition and disposition database using TRACKS.

3. Participates in the design and construction of new and renovated systems, maintenance, and appearance of existing exhibits and tanks, including life support materials and equipment.

• Maintains cleanliness of the displays through cleaning glass and decor, scrubbing algae and removing debris to meet establish MSAQ standards.
• Performs cleaning tasks, water changes, backwashing and other procedures necessary to care for pumps, filters, and maintain water quality standards, and consult Coral Laboratory Supervisor to determine appropriate schedules for maintenance and troubleshooting guides. 
• Cleans back-up areas including scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming water and pest control.
• Maintains current knowledge of all pumps, valves, filters, and chillers dealing with life support of the lab.
• Participates in system design and fabrication in keeping with coral behavior and biological needs.

4. Serves as a representative of the Aquarium to the public and media.

• Participates in and presents at workshops, seminars, lectures, member programs and tours.
• Present at weekly meetings with other laboratory staff, NOAA, and USGS partners.
• Offers advice to other labs, MSAQ, and aquariums regarding aquarium techniques.
• Reaches out for advice to other members on the CPT team.

5. Train and mentor new volunteers and interns in all aspects of husbandry

• Able to work well with supervisors and staff.

6. Responds to life-support and animal-related emergencies, at times after work.

• As scheduled, works cooperatively to execute response to mitigate alarms for planned incidents or drills, including after-hours when needed.
• Responsible for monitoring alarms based on an established on-call system and occasionally responding to emergencies after hours.

7. Provides support for other departments as needed.

8. Possess keen observational skills and be highly detail-oriented and adept at problem solving.

9. Assist in writing SOPs for future staff members and for overall coral project.

10. Adhere to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

11. Maintains detailed data records (photos, measurements, medical records, etc.) and contributes to information gathered as directed by the Project Managers of the CPT team.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related discipline or extensive hands-on experience working with a live animal collection at a zoo, aquarium or similar institution.
• 6 months experience working at a public/private aquarium preferred.
• Experience in the care and maintenance of a wide variety of coral and invertebrates.
• Proficiency in the capture, handling, transfer and transportation of coral and invertebrates.
• Possesses experience and knowledge towards disease and treatment of corals and invertebrates.
• Must have good organization and time management skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays. Must respond to emergency calls involving but not limited to animal related or life support.
• This position calls for physical activity throughout the day; must be able to stand, stoop, walk on possible uneven surfaces, climb ladders, and lift a minimum of 50lbs.
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License and insurance, or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
• Must be self-motivated, with the desire to provide the best care to animals under care.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position requires a highly motivated individual who will take direction from the Curator, Supervisor, and Marine Mammal Staff in assisting with the animal care routine and maintenance for the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and north American river otter areas. As an intern, you can expect to get experience in the daily care of our Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and north American river otters and learn what it takes to be a marine mammal trainer. Throughout the internship, interns will learn various tasks required for the daily operation of a marine mammal facility; gain practical training experience by working closely with staff during training and enrichment sessions; and develop skills in time management, communication, public speaking, and teamwork. The position will also be responsible for adhering to all aquarium safety protocols and standard operating procedures. The goal is to help interns succeed professionally in any chosen field. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assists marine mammal staff in the overall daily care of the dolphins and otters
• Performs proper animal diet preparation
• Keeps support areas clean, organized, and safe
• Completes educational animal training lecture series
• Builds knowledge of operant conditioning and aids staff in behavioral training of the dolphins and otters
• Designs, implements, and evaluates environmental enrichment under guidance of staff
• Supports interactive programs and educational presentations through formal and informal public speaking opportunities
• Ensures guest satisfaction by delivering exceptional customer service
• Complies with all standard operating procedures (SOPs) pertaining to daily operations and safety
• Promotes conservation, animal welfare, and good stewardship in daily tasks
• Undertakes special projects as assigned by manager(s) 

QUALIFICATIONS

• 18 years of age or older
• Enrolled in or recent graduate of a four-year college program in psychology, biology, marine biology or another related field
• Previous animal care experience, such as volunteering at an animal shelter or completing other internships is preferred

The Manager of Education & Volunteer Programs is a supervisory position that is instrumental in the delivery of education and content for Mississippi Aquarium. This position plays a critical role in the oversight of all field trips, summer camps, outreach, and networking at a local, state, and national level. The Manager of Education must be self-motivated, results driven, and willing to work in a team environment. This position also oversees Mississippi Aquarium’s Volunteer Programs, which requires initiative, creativity, and strength in coordinating multi-faceted services throughout the entire organization. This position works closely with other members of the Guest Experience team and across all departments for MSAQ.

II. Responsibilities:

· Oversee the success of Mississippi Aquarium’s Education Department; areas include all education programming, content and exhibit graphics support, outreach, networking, and guest experience support

· Hire, train and manage a seasonal team of camp counselors, and a small but mighty permanent crew. Empower a love for learning for all team members and guests

· Consistently seek ways to drive sales and bring revenue success to the education department

· Manage the success of MSAQ’s Strategic Assessment Plan (SAP)

· Serve as a spokesperson for MSAQ

· Develop innovative field trip programs for all ages, include assessment strategies to evaluate student success and best practices

· Create and implement innovative hands-on camp programs

· Oversee the success of Mississippi Aquarium’s volunteer program; areas of volunteer service include adult (18+), family, higher education, docent, special needs, teens, and group opportunities.

· Provide excellent communication to all volunteers including Aquarium updates, training and learning opportunities, appreciation initiatives, recruitment needs for specific shifts, etc.

· Work closely with Animal Care to handle ambassador animals for programs; must follow strict protocols and guidelines

· Network and support the community.

· Utilize MSAQ’s volunteer management platform and database, Volgistics.

· Perfect the recruitment and onboarding process for new volunteers.

· Maintain accurate records for volunteers and provide appropriate reporting and evaluation for long-term strategic growth and planning.

· Consistently review, discuss and propose steps to increase recruitment.

· Fill in and help manage daily operational needs when necessary

· Work weekends, evenings, and overnights when necessary

· Work in a collaborative team environment, cross-train and support all other Guest Experience areas with projects, planning, and training

III. Qualifications:

· Minimum 3-5 years supervising a team in an informal education role

· Minimum 4-year bachelor’s degree in education or related field

· Strong background in developing and teaching STEAM-based curriculum

· Certification with the National Association for Interpretation is preferred

The Veterinary Technician is responsible for supporting the veterinary services department in providing medical care for the entire collection of animals at Mississippi Aquarium and rehabilitating sea turtle patients. The ideal candidate will represent Mississippi Aquarium in a positive manner, demonstrating enthusiasm and a strong commitment to all aspects of the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Provides medical treatments and performs daily evaluations of patients under the guidance of staff veterinarians.

• Operates and maintains all veterinary diagnostic and laboratory equipment within the veterinary hospital

• Performs laboratory diagnostic evaluation such as cytological and/or microbiological sample collection, hematology, parasitology, urinalysis and necropsy techniques.

• Helps with scheduling routine and emergent animal examinations

• Assists in maintaining the veterinary pharmacy, ensuring compliance with controlled substances regulations, removing and replacing expired medications and supplies. 

• Collect diagnostic samples on all collection animals at direction of veterinarian

• Prepare and ship out diagnostic samples to external laboratories as needed

• Prepare for and assist in large medical and surgical procedures

• Assist with and/or independently perform necropsy examinations

• Maintains a high level of competency in the operation of all diagnostic equipment including digital radiography, ultrasound, and endoscopy

• Prepare and dispense prescriptions

• Maintain accurate animal medical records promptly

• Input data entry of test sample results from external diagnostic laboratories into medical records 

• Process research samples as needed, including cleaning/organizing the specimen refrigerators and ultralow (-80) freezer

• Maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for veterinary department

• Mentor and assist with training of volunteers, interns, and externs that participate in and support daily clinical activities.

Required Qualifications and Skills: 

• Graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program

• Credentialed veterinary technician (CVT/RVT/LVT). Out-of-state candidates must obtain Mississippi licensure within one year of employment at MSAQ.

• 1-2 years of veterinary technician experience in a wildlife, zoo, and/or aquarium setting. Alternately, at least 3 years as a veterinary technician in another setting. 

• Knowledge in day-to-day function and in a veterinary hospital, with a knowledge base of veterinary nursing

• Experience with laboratory diagnostics

• Experience with aquatic species and/or exotic and zoo species in any capacity

• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, word, power point etc.)

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to take initiative and work independently in the absence of supervision 

• Follow written standard operating procedures and verbal directives

• Able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions

• Flexible schedule to allow for working various shifts/hours including some nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as being on call to respond to emergencies

• Hold valid state driver’s license

• Access to have reliable personal transportation to allow for movement between worksites throughout the day as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with using Tracks Software and VetRocket/RocketPACS

• Familiar with monitoring non-domestic animal patients under anesthesia/sedation

• Experience performing necropsy examinations

• Knowledge of medical procedures and rehabilitation of sea turtles preferred

• Interest in rehabilitation of animals and participation in research/scientific studies

The position reports to the Manager of Life Support Systems & Water Quality. The LSS Operator is expected to perform all duties of the daily LSS routine, including remote backwashes and system checks, equipment inspections, interpretation of exhibit parameters, as well as troubleshooting and correction of any parameters that are out of range. The LSS Operator is to assist in developing relevant SOPs and protocols, maintain and repair equipment, stock supplies, and aid the Mississippi Aquarium Animal Care departments with any issues as they relate to LSS. This position will provide regular coverage for select Water Quality duties, such as sample collection or emergency testing. The position supports Facility Operations, Animal Care and Veterinary Services to provide the highest exhibit quality for the animal collection and Mississippi Aquarium’s guests.  

REQuirements

Candidate must have an associate’s degree in an aquarium-focused college program, a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, marine biology or related field, or compensatory related field experience. Applicants should have experience in maintaining life support systems for closed-system aquaria in a public aquarium or zoo setting. Ideally have familiarity with both small and large filtration systems. Experience caring for, or working adjacent to, aquatic animals such as teleosts, elasmobranchs, and invertebrates is essential. Knowledge and proficiency with pumps, foam fractionators, plumbing, and disinfection / sterilization equipment is a must. Comprehensive knowledge of water quality parameters (fresh, brackish and marine) and how common life support components impact these parameters, is highly preferred. Lab awareness of basic water quality techniques, as they relate to zoos and aquariums, is a plus. Understanding of life support automation and its inner workings is a plus. AALSO certifications are a definite plus.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

1.    Follow established objectives, protocols, policies and operating procedures to ensure the most successful and efficient LSS operations at Mississippi Aquarium. 

2.    Assist the Facility Operations department in operations pertaining to the water quality laboratory and the life support systems.

3.    Assist Facility Operations and Animal Care teams by following a schedule and maintaining communication for routine equipment repairs, equipment upgrades, and backwash scheduling.

4.    Assist Facility Operations with saltwater make up via operating heavy machinery (crane, forklift).

5.    Under the supervision of the Manager of LSS/WQ, maintains equipment inventory for PVC storage area and tool shop used to rebuild electric motors, following regulatory guidelines and Mississippi Aquarium’s internal safety standards.

6.    Assist in basic WQ lab coverage, including basic spectrophotometry tests as needed.

7.    Assist Facility Operations with routine consumables procurement and maintain within budgeted expenditures. 

8.    Assist Facility Operations with training and monitoring of interns and volunteers.

9.    Communicate and maintain working relationships with guests, staff, supervisors, other departments, suppliers, professional associations, and colleagues in related industries. The desire to travel and present projects at conferences is a plus.

10.  Reliable transportation, the ability to engage with electronic communications, and the ability to use a variety of power tools are required.

11.  Participate in staff meetings and provide input for improvements of the water quality lab, animal care and life support operations.

12.  Maintain awareness of industry-related activities, technology and trends. Maintain awareness of newly developing husbandry practices as they relate to water quality and life support systems.
